On Wednesday, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer revealed few details about the forthcoming operating system which will be targetting application developers to write Internet-based applications and drive Windows users to use more Internet-based programs.

Ballmer was short on details, saying more information would spoil the announcement. Windows Cloud is a separate project from Windows 7, the OS Microsoft is developing to succeed Windows Vista. Microsoft’s main rival Google already adopted Cloud computer offering users to use Google Docs. More and more companies are started cloud computing.

In Microsoft’s latest attempt to win search engine traffic, they have decided to give away prizes to signup for a campaign and let them know searchers searching behavior. This scheame will be called as SearchPerks.

In May, they accounced Cashback Scheme where online buyers would get their money back buying products searching through Live search. But SearchPerks is different approach to learn about searchers behaviour and search trends.

According to SearchPerks Terms and Conditions, this promotion will be limited to first 1,000,000 responders before December 31, 2008.

Recently I came across an article in cNet.com about Microsoft Search rating research paper, BrowseRank: Letting Web Users Vote for Page Importance. The paper formulates a new algorithm to rate website based on the actual usage of data by the users rathen then the using links(Google PageRank) as a measure of relevancy.

In my plain word, according to researchers PagaRank or TrustRank can be manipulated by link farming or spamming and again Google sometimes penalises website by deducting the PageRank to PR0. However, new algorithm will focus on the behavior of the visitors, how long they are spending their time. Moreover, BrowseRank keep track the source of visiting; like bookmarks, referral or tapping urls in address bar.

No, Create XML Sitemap and Submit to Google, Yahoo! and MSN

A very common sales speech, “Submit your site to 200 Search Engines and improve your search engine optimization … blah blah blah”. I always wonder who cares about this 200 Search Engines when whole world is satisfied with just 5 search engines; Google, Yahoo!, Live, Ask and AOL.

According to comScore’s recent report on Search Engine Market share, Google is still leading sharing 61.5% despite of dropping from 61.8%. It’s their first drop in market share since December 2007 (when it went from 58.6% to 58.4%). In contrast, Microsoft showed its first gain in the past year. After months and months of incremental decline, Microsoft rose from an 8.5% share in May 2008 to 9.2% in June 2008. That’s the first full month that Microsoft’s Live Search Cashback has been running, so this is likely a factor in Microsoft’s rise.

Before Microsoft and Yahoo feel too good about Google’s “fall,” let’s consider the actual number of searches each handled versus market share?

• Google: 7.1 billion
• Yahoo: 2.4 billion
• Microsoft: 1.1 billion
• Ask: 501 million
• AOL: 471 million

After failing acquire (and then merger) Yahoo for several months, Microsoft is now buying new generation search engine Powerset.com. Many believes, Powerset.com can replace Google as a search engine as they are developing more intelligent form of web search called semantic search. This technology not only indexes web pages, but applies additional algorithms to parse each information piece and extract its possible meaning to yield more relevant search results than what we are seeing today.

Currently Google uses Web 2.0 technology on the other hand Powerset.com is based Web 3.0, is widely considered to become the next evolution of the Internet. Compared to today’s Internet or even Web 2.0 applications, the semantic web is expected to become much more intelligent and is all about all about connecting information from various sources and creating meaningful relations between different pieces of online information.

As declared earlier, Microsoft has stopped OEM sales of Windows XP on June 30, 2008. Almost like forcing users to switch to Vista. No doubt, to me, Windows Vista is one of the most buggy, unprepared, hated product at the moment released from Microsoft. On the other hand, Windows XP is the well-performed Operating System in Microsoft’s history.

I guess, it was becoming a headache for Microsoft to concentrate on Vista while they had to work with XP’s issues as well. Worldwide people have been signing up petitions, show their anger, hateret - nothing stopped Microsoft from taking this hard decision. However, they have already increased the deadline for XP.
